International Mining Fatality Review

The International Mining Fatality Review was initially prepared by Russell Noon, a University of Wollongong engineering student. Russell undertook industrial experience with the department during the 2003/2004 summer break.

The International Mining Fatality Review was updated in 2008 by Patrick MacNeill, also a University of Wollongong mining engineering student, who undertook industrial experience with the department during the 2007/2008 break.

The aim of the project is to compile an extensive database of mining-related fatalities resulting in a fatality comparison across the world. Mines, equipment hirers and equipment manufacturers can use this statistical data in risk management systems to improve safety.

Where possible, the International Mining Fatality Review has also been integrated with Mining Design Guidelines (MDGs). A series of tables outlining fatalities that relate to each MDG have been created and include details of each incident as well as any recommendations.

The data and information in the International Mining Fatality Review and its accompanying publications is the work of Russell and Patrick and has not undergone detailed review by the regulator. The regulator acknowledges there may be alternative interpretations to some of the categories selected by the authors. The content has not been updated since publication in April 2008, so will not include recent events.
