Incident summaries: metalliferous, extractives and other non-coal

Learning about what can go wrong from mining incidents is an important part of driving improvements in work health and safety.

Incident summary reports are a resource that can be used in tool box talks, WHS committee meetings and management forums to increase risk awareness and stimulate discussion.

Learning about what can go wrong from mining incidents is an important part of driving improvements in work health and safety. Associated non-technical skills (ANTS) including communication, team work, leadership and situation awareness support good decision making.

Making good decisions about the course of action to take in hazardous situations is based on a common understanding of the potential risks and how these could play out in various scenarios. Incident summaries support good decision making by highlighting things that went wrong in different mines with similar risk profiles and which have the potential to contribute to catastrophic events or cause serious personal injury.

The department encourages mine management to bring these reports to the attention of their supervisors and workers by involving them in discussions about circumstances in their workplace that may contribute to similar events and how these can be prevented.
