Safety key to a happy festive season

As we approach the festive period, workers are reminded to remain focused on keeping safe and to prevent a workplace incident from taking away the joy of the season.

Alcohol consumption, lack of sleep, varied routines and distractions can affect fitness for work, and while Christmas is a period of happiness for some, for others it may trigger feelings of loss, separation, and loneliness.

The Regulator makes several recommendations to workers and mine operators to ensure a safe and happy festive season:

  • Workers should carefully consider their fitness for work, remain focused on tasks and be aware of hazards, travel safely, and take care of their own health and safety.

  • Mine operators should educate workers and supervisors of their obligations detailed in the mine’s health and safety management system and consider workload impacts from absences and leave.
