Registration of general industry plant

What is general industry plant?

Plant that is used in all general industry, including the mining industry is known as general industry plant. Plant that is only used in the mining industry is known as mining specific plant.

How do I register general industry plant?

All general industry plant must be registered with SafeWork NSW. See the further information links under design and item registration.

What are the different types of plant registration?

There are two types of plant registration; design registration and item registration.

Note: Design registered items of plant may also require item registration.

Design registration

What is design registration?

Design registration applies to all items manufactured to the same design. A design registration number must be granted before the plant can be used. The application for design registration can be made by the designer, manufacturer or supplier.

What type of plant needs to be design registered?

Design registration is needed for the following types of general industry plant (although some exclusions apply);

  • Pressure equipment, other than pressure piping, and categorised as hazard level A, B, C or D.
  • Gas cylinders.
  • Tower cranes including self-erecting tower cranes.
  • Lifts, including escalators and moving walkways.
  • Building maintenance units.
  • Hoists with a platform movement exceeding 2.4 metres, designed to lift people.
  • Work boxes designed to be suspended from cranes.
  • Amusement devices.
  • Concrete placement units with delivery booms.
  • Prefabricated scaffolding and prefabricated formwork.
  • Boom-type elevating work platforms.
  • Gantry cranes with a safe working load greater than 5 tonnes or bridge cranes with a safe working load of greater than 10 tonnes, and any gantry crane or bridge crane which is designed to handle molten metal or Schedule 11 hazardous chemicals.
  • Vehicle hoists.
  • Mast climbing work platforms.
  • Mobile cranes with a rated capacity of greater than 10 tonnes.

Item registration

What is item registration?

Item registration is the registration of each piece of plant. The application for item registration must be made by the person in control of the plant.

What type of plant needs to be item registered?

Item registration is needed for the following types of general industry plant;

  • Boilers categorised as being of hazard level A, B or C according to the criteria in AS 4343—1999.
  • Pressure vessels categorised as being of hazard level A, B or C according to the criteria in AS 4343—1999 except for LP gas fuel vessels for automotive use covered by AS/NZS 3509:1996, serially produced pressure vessels covered by AS 2971—1987 and pressure vessels that do not require periodic internal inspection in accordance with the criteria in Table 4.1 in AS/NZS 3788:1996.
  • Lifts (including escalators and moving walkways) as defined in AS 1735 Parts 1 to 17 (as listed in Schedule 1, except for lifts in mine shafts).
  • Amusement devices (other than coin operated amusement devices) that are, or may be, operated otherwise than by manual power.
  • Tower cranes.
  • Building maintenance units.
  • Concrete placing units (truck mounted with boom).
  • Mobile cranes with a safe working load greater than 10 tonnes.
