Illegal mining on the Peel River

The NSW Resources Regulator has been made aware of illegal fossicking on the Peel River, Nundle NSW.

Fossicking activity is unlawful if prohibited powered mining equipment is used and the person undertaking fossicking has not obtained the required consent to fossick on private land and waters.

Unlawful equipment includes:

  • 'Highbanker’ sluices
  • Mobile plant
  • Mechanised dredges
  • Power operated trommels
  • Powered gold wheels
  • Alluvial mining plant
  • Concentrators
  • Jack hammers
  • Water pumps

Consents are necessary for fossicking on private land, Crown Land, State forests, National Parks, land or waters subject to native title, or land held under a mining or petroleum authorisation.

Fossicking can be a popular recreational activity to search for and collect minerals, gemstones and mineral bearing material. However, there are laws in place to protect NSW’s natural environment and the rights of landowners.

Due the increased activity on the Peel River, the NSW Resources Regulator is planning to carry out compliance to stop these illegal mining activities. Illegal mining penalties include on the spot fines of up to $2,500.

To report illegal fossicking call 1300 814 609.
